About 1,000 families have been forcibly evicted from their homes to make room for roads, up-market housing and hotels and shopping centers since 2003. Homes have been demolished in the capital, Malabo, and on the mainland, in the major city of Bata, as well as in other large towns. Many of the houses demolished were solid structures in well-established neighborhoods and the vast majority of the occupants had title to the land.

Most of the over 1,000 families forcibly evicted from their homes in Malabo, Bata and Kogo in recent years have not yet been compensated for their losses. As a result, many have been forced to live in overcrowded, deplorable conditions. In addition, many more remain at risk of further forced evictions.

I urge you, as President, to ensure that your government ends the practice of forced evictions, that victims of previous forced evictions receive adequate compensation for their losses, and that those who cannot provide for themselves receive alternative housing without further delay, thus prioritizing the most vulnerable.

The government of Equatorial Guinea should make plans to ensure security of tenure and access to adequate safe water and sanitation for those living in informal settlements.
I also urge you to adopt guidelines for evictions which comply with international human rights law, based on the UN Basic Principles and Guidelines on Development-based Evictions and Displacement.
