2)  WRITE YOUR LETTER

A personal letter is better, or you can download our sample letter (RTF) as inspiration. In either case, here are a few bullet points to help you:

  • International law prohibits the issuing of pardons, amnesties and similar measures designed to prevent accountability for abuses such as torture, war crimes and enforced disappearance.
  • Amnesty International opposes such measures without exception because they obstruct the truth, prevent victims from obtaining reparations, and contravene the duty that governments have to investigate serious crimes.
  • Issuing sweeping, pre-emptive pardons places the current administration in the company of pariah/abusive/corrupt regimes throughout the world who have sought to shield themselves from prosecution for serious human rights abuses committed while in power.
