Get urgent actions and occasional news on refugees. We will also let you know about refugee-related events and volunteer opportunities with the AIUSA Refugee Program, including:

  • Our asylum detention trainings. These intensive weekend sessions include classes on asylum law and advocacy methods, and a visit to a prison or detention center, where trainees interview asylum-seekers. We offer this training several times a year in cities around the country, for about six people each time. Learn more »
  • Our documentation project. Asylum-seekers in prison are in urgent need of human rights documents, and most prison libraries have outdated documents, or none at all. To fill this need, AIUSA Refugee Program volunteers have been telephoning prisons and detention centers to find out what documents are needed, and then we send the documents together with information on asylum, and how to apply for asylum.
  • Volunteer positions. Our program is governed by a seven-member Steering Committee, made up of AIUSA members. They serve for two- and three-year terms, so we periodically fill vacancies. In late 2005 or early 2006, we will also appoint new Refugee Coordinators for each of the five regions of AIUSA.
