I am writing to urge you to release Walid Yunis Ahmad (also known as Abu Khubeib) immediately, and to offer reparations to him and his family for the years he was illegally detained.

Walid Yunis Ahmad was arrested on February 6th, 2000 in Erbil, and was detained without charge or trial for almost 11 years. He was tortured following arrest and held in solitary confinement for long periods. He has frequently been moved from one prison to another without explanation.

Amnesty International learned that Walid Yunis Ahmad was sentenced on March 17th, 2011, after a 1-day trial to 5 years in prison, in addition to the 10 years of detention he has already suffered. He was sentenced on charges of terrorism for a crime that he allegedly committed in 2009, even though in 2009 he had already been in the custody of the Kurdish regional authorities for nine years. Amnesty International believes that Walid Yunis Ahmad was sentenced on fabricated charges, created to justify years of unlawful imprisonment.

I too am gravely concerned that Walid Yunis Ahmad was detained for 10 years without trial, and that his sentence was based on fabricated charges. His previous detention without charge or trial was a flagrant violation of Iraq’s obligations under international human rights law and Iraq’s own Constitution.

Walid Yunis Ahmad is one of thousands of people who have been detained for years without charge or trial in prisons across Iraq. Under international law, all people have the right to either be charged, fairly tried or be released. The Kurdish government must release Walid Yunis Ahmad immediately, and offer reparations to him and his family for the years he was illegally detained.
