Stop Executions in Ohio

The State of Ohio has announced new lethal injection procedures and is looking to resume executions. It is seeking to execute Kenneth Biros on December 8. Six executions are scheduled for the first 6 months of 2010. But the death penalty can never be humane, regardless of the method of execution. Call on Governor Strickland to esstablish a moratorium on ALL executions in Ohio.

I am writing to urge you to declare a moratorium on executions in Ohio.  I am extremely concerned that the terribly botched execution attempt of Romell Broom on September 15 has exposed serious flaws in the way the death penalty is administered in your state. The new protocol Ohio has introduced will not solve these problems, yet executions at the rate of one per month continue to be scheduled.

It is clear that there is a pressing need to take a long look at how Ohio carries out executions, given what happened to Romell Broom. Over the course of some two hours, the execution team repeatedly tried and failed to find a useable vein in which to insert the lethal injection needle, before finally giving up. In recent years, the executions of Joseph Clark and Christopher Newton both were plagued by the same difficulties that prevented Mr. Broom’s lethal injection from being carried out.  It is far from clear how the intravenous injection of a single drug will address the problems Ohio execution teams have had in finding suitable veins.

Though I in no way want to downplay the suffering caused by violent crime, with these botched and failed executions your state is coming perilously close to torturing its prisoners, and I am sure you do not want Ohio to be known for that.  What these horrific episodes make clear is that the death penalty can never be made humane; killing is an inherently inhumane act.

The responsible course of action is clear.  You must declare a moratorium and halt executions in your state.
